About Bitcoin
Bitcoin is a digital currency created by an anonymous person or group of people in 2008 called Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin is a digital currency that operates without a central authority or government, which makes it decentralized. Decentralization ensures that all transactions are secure, transparent, and peer-to-peer. Its main goal was to solve the issue of double-spending, which occurs when a digital currency is spent more than once.
With Bitcoin’s decentralized structure, no person can control it independently, and transactions can be processed quickly and securely between users. As a result, Bitcoin became a new digital currency independent of any central authority and used for secure, online transactions without intermediaries like banks. Traditionally, banks and other financial institutions act as intermediaries, leading to slower transaction times, higher fees, and potential security risks.
The first Bitcoin transaction occurred in January 2009, when Satoshi Nakamoto sent 10 Bitcoins to software developer Hal Finney. After that, Bitcoin’s popularity gained momentum as more people became aware of its potential to revolutionize the financial sector. Today, Bitcoin is mainly used as a form of payment for goods and services, and it has also become an investment option to diversify portfolios.
Bitcoin halving is a pre-programmed event that occurs every 210,000 blocks mined, where the reward for mining new Bitcoin blocks is cut in half. This halving controls the supply of Bitcoin and ensures that only 21 million Bitcoin will ever exist.
As of 2023, network participants who validate transactions are awarded 6.25 Bitcoins for each block successfully mined. The event occurs every four years and is part of capping Bitcoin. The coin hit records after each of the last three halvings.
In the next halving in 2024, the block reward will fall to 3.125. Over time, the impact of each halving will diminish as the block reward approaches zero. Bitcoin cycles bottom around 12-18 months before the halving, and this cycle structure resembles the past ones.
